On Friday 16th March, 900 of the very best in social care attended a glittering awards ceremony at Birmingham’s ICC, for the National Finals of the Great British Care Awards, where the national category winners were announced by presenter Jeremy Vine.

The Great British Care Home Awards, hosted by Care England, brought together the winners from the nine regional Great British Care Awards held in Autumn 2017. Winners from each region were invited to compete once again to become the national champions.

Industry supporters include the Department of Health, The National Care Forum, Alzheimer’s Society, The Voluntary Organisations Disability Group (VODG) and the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) as well as commercial organisations.

There were a total of twenty one award categories available for nomination, which represented all areas of the care sector, ranging  from  older people or specialist services,  frontline staff such as care workers and care managers to people who have made an impact in other ways such as training, and specialist care in areas such as dementia and innovation.

Holmes Care Group were represented at the awards by Service Manager of Larkfield View, Elsie MacLennnan. Elsie who won the regional award back in November 2017, also went on to scoop the National award in the 'Care Home Registered Manager' category.

Judges were impressed by Elise's determination to turn around Larkfield View which initially had problems, to a care home which now has a good rating and is respected in the community. The panel also acknowledged how Elsie and her team continuously raise money and have successfully managed to take the residents on holidays and short breaks, giving them opportunities to create new memories and live a fulfilling life.

Elsie said "I am honored to have received such high recognition for my work at the Great British Care Awards, National Finals - it has been a very rewarding and exciting experience all around, having met the other finalists at interview stage I know first hand how high the competition was in this category and feel so proud and humbled to have been chosen as the winner."

Bankview Care Home

Thank you for the excellent level of care that my father, Frank Boyle, has received. Bankview demonstrated for us the template for a care home and how it should feel and be run. Friendly, welcoming, excellent care levels, length of time staff remain loyal to the home and above all a clear and comforting atmosphere of great leadership.

K Macdonald in memory of my Aunt Jean

I can't exaggerate the admiration I have for the management and staff of Craigielea. I've never experienced so much patience, coaxing, kindness and care. These people share their lives and emotions, laugh and cry and mourn for the people who entrust themselves to care.

J Ellis in memory of Steve

The staff talked about my best friend being an inspiration to them, despite his illness It made me change my approach with him, instead of being despondent and sad, I spoke with him the way we had always been with each other. The staff saw him as a person.
