About day services for older people

Day centres for older people are places where the elderly, and people who have a disability due to physical or mental frailty, or other care needs, can be provided with practical assistance and the opportunity to socialise with others, whilst also receiving the care and support of professional trained staff and volunteers. They can be involved with, and enjoy many stimulating organised activities, such as, music therapy, singing, gardening, light exercise, arts and crafts and local day trips. In-house hairdressers, chiropodists and opticians can also be arranged. A day care centre can be a great place for an older person to make new friends whilst engaging in new activities, and a chat over a cuppa.

Outings and day trips
Various community outings and shopping excursions are usually organised, with the use of a minibus that can also offer door-to-door transport with wheelchair access to and from the day centre, for those who may require it.

Food and refreshments
Home cooked lunches, snacks and afternoon tea are also provided, taking into account any dietary needs and requirements.

How can you or your loved one receive care and support at a day care service?
You can get a referral to a day care centre from your local GP, by a relative, or you can apply by yourself. It is usually possible to arrange a try-out day at a day centre as a taster.

Once you have been assessed and your application accepted, an individual care plan will be created which will be tailored to your needs, requirements and interests.

Most day care centres can provide professional help and assistance with administration of medications, but generally day centres for older people mostly offer their services for older people who require lower levels of care. Day care centres are generally unable to give support for older people who require overnight care and who have complex care needs.

To all the staff at Almond View - a big thank you for looking after Mum, with such kindness and dedication. Despite living 400 miles away, I always had a good feeling that she was in good hands. When I did visit, the staff without exception, stopped to chat to us even though they were extremely busy. Please accept my heart felt thank you to you all - a real credit to Almond View.

Bankview Care Home

Thank you for the excellent level of care that my father, Frank Boyle, has received. Bankview demonstrated for us the template for a care home and how it should feel and be run. Friendly, welcoming, excellent care levels, length of time staff remain loyal to the home and above all a clear and comforting atmosphere of great leadership.

Both mum and I were most impressed with Beechwood and we have decided that is where we would like Dad to come to. You have put both mine and mum's minds at rest knowing that Dad will be looked after.

K Macdonald in memory of my Aunt Jean

I can't exaggerate the admiration I have for the management and staff of Craigielea. I've never experienced so much patience, coaxing, kindness and care. These people share their lives and emotions, laugh and cry and mourn for the people who entrust themselves to care.

J Ellis in memory of Steve

The staff talked about my best friend being an inspiration to them, despite his illness It made me change my approach with him, instead of being despondent and sad, I spoke with him the way we had always been with each other. The staff saw him as a person.
