Residents celebrate the joy of reading for world book day

Residents and team members at Alexander House Care Home and Craigie House Care Home in Crossgates came together on Thursday 5th March to celebrate World Book Day, embracing their own theme that “there is something special about books.”

Throughout the week leading up to the celebration, residents and staff explored the most popular books from the years residents were born, sparking memories and lively conversations about favourite stories, authors and characters. The homes also created a colourful “wall of books”, inviting residents, visitors and staff to share the titles that have shaped their lives and arranged bookmark making arts and crafts sessions so everyone could be included in the activities.

The initiative encouraged everyone to bring along a favourite book to share with others, turning the day into a celebration of storytelling, connection and shared memories.

At Craigie House, resident Nan was spotted relaxing in the home’s cosy Book Nook, enjoying some quiet time with a good read. Other residents across both homes happily posed for photographs with their favourite titles, which ranged from beloved novels by Catherine Cookson to books about the high-octane world of Formula One.

World Book Day is a lovely opportunity to celebrate the joy that reading brings into our lives. Books can spark memories, inspire conversations and bring people together. It has been wonderful to see residents reminiscing about the stories they grew up with and sharing them with each other.

Residents themselves were equally enthusiastic about the celebrations.

One resident commented: “Books mean knowledge and knowledge gives me ideas. I’ve always loved learning new things through reading.”

The team at both homes believe activities like these help strengthen connections between residents while encouraging conversation, creativity and reminiscence. Creating opportunities for meaningful engagement is part of everyday life, ensuring residents continue to enjoy the hobbies and interests that matter most to them.
