Dementia Friendly Walks for Wishaw Residents

April 03, 2019

In General News

Research in recent years has shown the benefits of physical exercise with people suffering from dementia or similar illnesses, as it can help to stimulate them and relive stress and boredom.

To better support people living with dementia to walk more Beechwood Care Home in Wishaw, have partnered up with Scottish walking charity “Paths for All” and have introduced dementia friendly walks to their weekly activities schedule.

Each walk is led by a trained Walk Leader using safe, accessible paths that have been developed in collaboration with people living with dementia.
The walking paths give residents the opportunity to explore the outdoors in the local Wishaw area, enjoy fresh air all year round, appreciate the local wildlife, and meet new people.

Paths for All currently support 28 dementia friendly walking projects offering 130 health walks, one of which is Beechwood Care Home; where the health walk starts at the care home to encourage residents to feel part of their community.

Beechwood Care Home Manager, Cathy Togneri thinks the dementia friendly health walks are fantastic, and they have now been integrated into the homes weekly activities schedule every Monday afternoon at 2pm.

She said: “Our weekly walks are beneficial for staff, residents and members of the public to view the care home as part of the community. We want to show people that the care home contributes to, and is part of the wider community.
“The walks encourage residents, who have mostly lived in the area, to reminisce about the places they pass. We also take residents who use wheelchairs out on the walk too so they can reminisce and benefit from fresh air.
“Staff have reported they find the walk a great way to get exercise and de-stress while at work. We are also trying to encourage visitors and members of the public to view walking as an easy and free way to support their health and well-being.”

Almond View Care Home

To all the staff at Almond View - a big thank you for looking after Mum, with such kindness and dedication. Despite living 400 miles away, I always had a good feeling that she was in good hands. When I did visit, the staff without exception, stopped to chat to us even though they were extremely busy. Please accept my heart felt thank you to you all - a real credit to Almond View.

Bankview Care Home

Thank you for the excellent level of care that my father, Frank Boyle, has received. Bankview demonstrated for us the template for a care home and how it should feel and be run. Friendly, welcoming, excellent care levels, length of time staff remain loyal to the home and above all a clear and comforting atmosphere of great leadership.

Both mum and I were most impressed with Beechwood and we have decided that is where we would like Dad to come to. You have put both mine and mum's minds at rest knowing that Dad will be looked after.

K Macdonald in memory of my Aunt Jean

I can't exaggerate the admiration I have for the management and staff of Craigielea. I've never experienced so much patience, coaxing, kindness and care. These people share their lives and emotions, laugh and cry and mourn for the people who entrust themselves to care.

J Ellis in memory of Steve

The staff talked about my best friend being an inspiration to them, despite his illness It made me change my approach with him, instead of being despondent and sad, I spoke with him the way we had always been with each other. The staff saw him as a person.
